So, you froze and canned and "put away" the local bounty last summer. And now it's February and you're ready to eat it. Well, get going! Let's "spice up" our cellars with some fresh ideas for preparing and serving summer's bounty in the winter season.

Canadian Culinary Book Awards

Prairie Feast was shortlisted for the Canadian Culinary Book Awards -- in a special category for books about "food and beverages but not cookbooks." The awards ceremony was Monday night at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair in Toronto. It didn't win, but what great company to be in!

It was my first visit to the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair -- and what a show! That's no bull. In fact, it's a lot of bull... and cows and horses and chickens...

High Plains Book Awards

Road trip! We just returned from Billings, Montana, where Prairie Feast was a finalist in the High Plains Book Awards. In fact, it was the only book in the history of the awards to be shortlisted in two categores at the same time (best first book and best non-fiction).

These awards recognize books that capture the essense of life on the great plains in the U.S. and Canada, from Texas to Saskatchewan. I'm so honoured (or is that honored)!

The first Word on the Street literary festival in Saskatoon was a ton of fun. The street in front of the main public library was full of people, booksellers and writerly organizations all dedicated to the literary life of the city. It was exciting to be there!

Word on the Street

Word on the Street is Saskatoon's newest literary festival. And I'm thrilled to be a part of it! The festival runs next Sunday from 11 am - 5 pm, with thirty local authors on three stages. I'll be reading from Prairie Feast at 4 pm, right after Yann Martel.

What a great time at the Edmonton at LitFest this past weekend! Here I am at the final event, a Brunch of Writers. That's me on the left with host Janice Williamson, author Candace Savage, cartoonist/author Sarah Leavitt and poet Alice Major.

Friday evening was a wonderful event called Savouries, for which Chef Gail Osbeck and her team of underprivileged youth at Kids in the Hall Bistro cooked up some recipes from Prairie Feast while I got to wax on poetically about the local bounty.

Saturday's event, Get Real, was a real experience for me, sitting on stage between two "big" thinkers, Dan Gardner and Andrew Potter. The topic: "what's authentic and true in our quest for meaningful and fulfilling lives." I won't even try to sum up the context of their comments, but mine was simple: good food, with a story to tell, prepared with love and served with pride - that's fulfilling in more ways than one!

Heading north with Prairie Feast

A few years ago, my husband and I set off for a weekend of camping in Meadow Lake, but my car had transmission trouble outside the Battlefords and we had to turn back. So, finally, my first visit to Meadow Lake!

I was invited to read from Prairie Feast at two events on one day. First, the afternoon in North Battleford for a book event at the public library. It was great to have the kids from Bready School in the audience asking all the right questions.

In Meadow Lake, the library organized a dessert evening at the seniors' centre, including a display of local-produced foods. Every dessert was made with a locally grown item, such as zucchini chocolate cake, baklava (dripping in honey) and pumpkin pie. I picked up a squeeze bottle of honey from the Parkland Honey Farm and a sack of potatoes. Thanks to everyone for a wonderful welcome!

The Mix Art Show

Back in June, I was the opening act at a house concert, and last night, I was the guest artist at a studio art show. My book is really taking me to new heights!

100 Mile Church Potluck

I always say, there's no better meal than a potluck. And that was the case at the 100-mile potluck at the Meewasin Valley United Church in Saskatoon.

Can you believe... wild goose jerky?? That was just one of the many terrific foods on the buffet table.

As the guest of honour, my table went first to the buffet. Being an author does have some privileges! Thanks to Elsie and everyone on the outreach committee for inviting me to an awesome meal.

Thin Air Literary Festival - Winnipeg

What a great time we had in Winnipeg at the Thin Air Writers Festival Sept 23 & 24. There was a good crowd at the Big Ideas series on Eating Locally at the Millennium Library.

The next day, I was invited to Brandon for a presentation at the Manitoba Institute of Culinary Arts. What a delightful place. The culinary school is located in the former nurses' residence of a mental hospital -- but it's a building right out of a movie set in 1900. Here's a picture of the dining room fireplace.

For lunch, the students and their chef instructors spread out a wonderful buffet featuring local products and many jars of preserves they made themselves, from jelly to chutney to pickles made from the bounty of their own gardens. It was a feast! Thanks everyone for the warm welcome in Winnipeg and Brandon.

I'm a big fan of saskatoon berries (that's me, picking berries with my husband last summer) so it was about time I made it to the Saskatoon Berry Festival in Mortlach. In just three years, the folks from Mortlach have built the festival into a one-day destination of crafts and food.

I had a table outside the Hollyhock Market to promote my book -- thanks so much to owners Lois and Jack. Lucky for me, I was also intalled next to the saskatoon berry sausage grill. Yum lunch!

Thanks, Craik! We had a fabulous event last night. My my brother Tom, a singer songwriter, performed some songs from his farming tribute CD, Like Father, Like Son and I read a few stories from my book. Then we visited everyone over nibbles and Saskatchewan wine from the Cypress Hills winery. The event was part of the annual Solar Fair held at the innovative Craik Eco-Centre.

I was introduced by my high school social studies teacher, Glenn Hymers. He was my favourite teacher... well, after Mrs. Cogswell in Grade 3.

Thank you to the Southwest Naturalists for a wonderful evening at the Swift Current Museum on Thurs., June 3. I read some stories, signed some books and enjoyed good conversation over nibbles made with Saskatchewan ingredients including potato fritatta, sausages, a rhubarb cake and good hearty homemade bread.

I slept like a baby at the Green Hectares Bed & Breakfast. In the morning I hiked to the petroglyph at dawn then popped into the Dutch Bakery on Main Street. I also found a treasure in the local Goodwill store -- an additon for my collection of "tacky tourist mugs from cities in which I have drunk coffee."

Dinner at McNally Robinson

My book and I were guests of honour at a special dinner at McNally Robinson Booksellers last night with a menu dedicated to the foods of Saskatchewan. We started with hand-rolled potato ravioli with a fresh vegetables salsa, moved on to chicken breasts on a bed of chickpeas, winding up with saskatoon berry creme brulée. Thanks to Chef Clint and his team at McNallys for a great performance.

The months of editing and waiting and editing are over! My first copies of Prairie Feast arrived yesterday. Hubby and I celebrated with a truly local meal - Berkshire pork chops, potatoes fried with onions and green peppers, cucumber salad and, for dessert, chocolates (oops, make that 95% local) and a glass of bubbly wine!

Copies of Prairie Feast should be showing up in local bookstores just as soon as they get them on the shelf, and also available from the publisher Coteau Books.

McNally Robinson Booksellers is not only a great bookstore, it's a great cafe, and we're combining both for a wonderful local food dinner and book event. Enjoy a three course meal showcasing Saskatchewan food and beverages, with a bit of Prairie Feast for dessert!

Tickets: Must be purchased in advance, $37.50.

Please note that you needn't partake in the dinner in order to enjoy this event. Seating will be provided for those who wish to attend the reading portion of the evening only.

The Regina Eco-Network is hosting a community potluck dinner to launch Prairie Feast to the "green" folks of Regina and area.

I'm so excited to be having a book launch at Gilead Café in Toronto, where chef Jamie Kennedy is a master at using local Ontario foods in his kitchen. We'll be joined (hopefully) by authors Gina Mallet and Gerry Shikatani, as well as west coast CBC broadcaster Don Genova, all of whom have read advance copies of the book and wrote nice endorsements for the back cover.

The MC for the evening will be my friend Marcia Young, the voice of CBC's The World This Hour.

When: Sunday, May 30, 4-6 pm.
Where: Gilead Café, 4 Gilead Place, Toronto
Bonus: Jamie Kennedy's famous french fries!
